Communication: Ways to Give Feedback

Many years ago, I had a friend I would vent to frequently. When she knew I was particularly distressed, she would ask "which of these do you want?":

  • Do you want me to just listen, quietly with no response?
  • Do you want me to simply repeat back what I've heard?
  • Do you want me to ask you questions?
  • Do you want to know my experience, strength and hope?
  • Do you want my advice?*
  • etc.

*Advice should really never be given without permission.
