Bipolar Spectrum

*Bipolar II is a version of Bipolar Disorder: depression is obvious but mild phases of high energy ("hypomania"), which can just look like anxiety and insomnia, are also present. This doesn't look at all like "manic-depression", just big mood and energy swings. But Bipolar II can be as severe as other forms of Bipolar Disorder, maybe even more prone to suicide. Bipolar II is an "official" diagnosis in the Bipolar Disorders group. James R. Phelps, M.D. 9 "Antidepressants" That Are Not Antidepressants

Three main components of Self Care Here are some examples of self care in action: Physical Moving your body, whether in some structured sport or exercise, or just dancing around, stretching, walking over to the park to feed the ducks. Give it something good to eat, that doesn't come in a bag or box from a drive through. Cook it yourself-take time for yourself, not just what ever is the fastest thing. Get the massage or something to wear that has great texture and color. Go to the doctor when you are sick. Mental/Emotional Be accepting, kind, easy to forgive yourself.-how would you treat a good friend who needed some TLC? Take every 3rd "I should" out of your vocabulary and say "no" at least once a week! Reasonable expectations. This doesn't mean the end of motivation or working hard. The point is to stretch yourself, not break yourself. Set limits if that is what you need- overindulgence is not nurturing either. Get enough people in your life, that yo

Communication: Ways to Give Feedback

Many years ago, I had a friend I would vent to frequently. When she knew I was particularly distressed, she would ask "which of these do you want?": Do you want me to just listen, quietly with no response? Do you want me to simply repeat back what I've heard? Do you want me to ask you questions? Do you want to know my experience, strength and hope? Do you want my advice?* etc. *Advice should really never be given without permission. Related Links: Active Listening and Reflective Responses also Setting Functional Boundaries By Pia Mellody.

Reiki Healing & Energy Sessions

I am trained in Usui Reiki second degree. I also am attuned to Kundalini Reiki (all 3 degrees) and Chakra Tantra Reiki. Reiki is both a hands on form of palm healing and a Buddhist spiritual practice. "Reiki is a spiritual practice developed in 1922 by Mikao Usui . After three weeks of fasting and meditating on Mount Kurama , in Japan , Usui claimed to receive the ability of " healing without energy depletion". "But it was the legendary healing power of Jesus Christ that triggered the discovery of reiki by Dr Usui. The story goes that one of his students asked him whether he could heal like Jesus. DR Usui found the answer after years of combing through religious texts the world over. His search fructified in some Sanskrit-Tibetan sutras and he developed his own healing power through austerities and meditation before starting to teach." BTW, Reiki is useful for cats too. A Course in Miracles

A Course in Miracles By Foundation of Inner Peace, Foundation for Inner Peace see related Some items I have found useful in my beginning A Course in Miracles study: Psychotherapy: Purpose, Process, and Practice An Extension of the Principles of A Course in Miracles. Taken down by Helen Schucman in the same manner as A Course in Miracles, this twenty-three page booklet discusses the Course's principles of healing and forgiveness in the context of psychotherapy. Written for professional therapists, the booklet nonetheless will be of help to anyone interested in how the Course's theoretical principle of healing—joining with another through the Holy Spirit—is applied to the field of psychotherapy. Evaluating Medications for Children

We now know that Depression and ADHD are indeed affecting children in epidemic numbers. Up to 2.5 percent of children suffer from depression and 3 to 5 percent of all children have ADHD (as many as 2 million American children or at least one child in every classroom). Successful treatment of depression or ADHD requires a combination of behavioral and family therapy and proper medication. But you are probably well aware that there has been a backlash against medicating young children – particularly for ADHD with Ritalin. Parents have every reason to be concerned about misdiagnosis and incorrect medication. However, according to child psychologist Patricia Dalton, while there have been many cases of children who have given medication when they did not need it, the larger concern is actually children with disorders who are not receiving the proper medication (or the proper dose). The Surgeon General’s Report also indicates “fewer children… are being treated for ADHD than suffer from it

Compulsive Overeating (COE) - (Becky Chase, MS,RD)Sports, Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutritionists "Compulsive Overeating (COE) is not formally recognized as an eating disorder diagnosis. However, the term "compulsive overeating" is often used by professionals and their clients to describe a disordered eating pattern that includes repeated b outs of over eating in response to emotional triggers and an obsession with food and weight. People with COE are not necessarily obese. Dieting is often part of this

Healthy Families Play Together

Did you know what the most important plaything in your home for your child is?YOU! There is no educational toy, so piece of sports equipment, no radio controlled gadget, no computer program, that can surpass what a child learns from their parent (or primary caregivers). Not only are you your first and most important teacher, you are their first and most important playmate. The reason is that the primary way children learn, is through play.Play is the work of the child. By playing with you, your child learns from infancy how to develop social relationships, how to get their needs met, how to learn what others are feeling, how to communicate, how to be empathetic, how language works, how to feel good about themselves, how to resolve conflicts, and on and on. The play that has the most value is often the simplest. When you do very little and just follow your child, they often get the most out of it.We call this child directed play. You become a sportscaster.“He shoots, he scores!”Just w

Greenspan, Jacqueline Salmon, Jacrueline Salmon see related Child Centered Special Time A Technique from The Challenging Child Set aside 20 minutes a day for special time. No interruptions. Set out toys your child likes to explore and try new things. Choose toys that are more open-ended than structured. Let your child know they are getting special time. Get on the floor with them. Stay close to your child so you can see each other’s faces. Let your child take the lead and choose what happens. Anything is OK unless it’s unsafe or destructive. Discover what your likes to do, what they want you to do. Respond, but don’t take over the play. WATCH, WAIT & WONDER. Enter your child’s world. Observing is the first step to good listening and understanding. Watch what your child seeks to play with and try to pick toys that facilitate further exploration and interactio
